چکیده

Neural Tube Defects, resulting from the failure in the closure of the neural tube, have been found to be one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in the infants and have a variable worldwide incidence rate. Various debatable theories suggest different models for the process of the formation of the neural tube or neurulation, resulting in different types of NTDs. NTDs are an outcome of the association of environmental, nutritional and genetic factors and their various interactions. The environmental and nutritional factors are mainly associated with maternal risk, while genetic factors can be both maternal and embryonic origin. Studies have shown strong association of genetic alterations in the metabolic pathway genes, embryonic transcription factor genes and developmental pathway genes with NTDs. Very few studies have focused on the genetic risk predisposed in the mothers of the affected pregnancies. The candidate genes studied as maternal risk have been derived from mainly one carbon metabolism or mouse mutants for NTDs

Prenatal Diagnosis, Sampling of Chorionic Villi

Prenatal diagnosis with application of the Amniotic fluid (Amniocentesis: AC) and chorionic villi sampling {CVS) is a general aspect of application in Human Genetics which facilitate the diagnosis of different Genetic defects, enclosing chromosomal abnormalities and Genosomopathies. Diagnosis of Genetic defects for AC and CVS is between 16-20th and 8-12th weeks of gestation respectively. Allica...

Syndromes, disorders and maternal risk factors associated with neural tube defects (III).

Fetuses with neural tube defects (NTDs) may be associated with syndromes, disorders, and maternal and fetal risk factors. This article provides a comprehensive review of syndromes, disorders, and maternal and fetal risk factors associated with NTDs, such as omphalocele, OEIS (omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects) complex, pentalogy of Cantrell, amniotic band sequence, limb-body...

Folate-related gene variants in Irish families affected by neural tube defects

Periconceptional folic acid use can often prevent neural tube defects (NTDs). Variants of genes involved in folate metabolism in mothers and children have been associated with occurrence of NTDs. We identified Irish families with individuals affected by neural tube defects. In these families, we observed that neural tube defects and birth defects overall occurred at a higher rate in the materna...

Nutrigenetic determinants of neural tube defects in India.

JUSTIFICATION Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the commonest birth defects with a high incidence in India. However, few studies have systematically looked into the etio-pathogeneis of NTDs, which mainly includes nutritional deficiencies and genetic predisposition. Efforts are afoot for universal food fortification with folic acid in the hope of preventing NTDs, without factual evidence of ...
